Ghana’s healthcare system, like that of many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), struggles to deliver optimum care. As a result, unmet need for healthcare in Ghana, are large and continue to increase. This is as a result of various barriers to care outside of resource deficiencies which are well-documented. Specific barriers to care among Ghanaians have been found to include:
Affordability barriers (direct and indirect costs; lack of social support at healthcare sites far from home)
Accessibility barriers (distance to healthcare sites, healthcare navigation issues)
Acceptability barriers (marginalized social status, fear and mistrust of conventional healthcare, misconceptions and poor understanding of medical conditions)
Miscellaneous barriers (not being aware that their condition can be fixed by simple surgical procedures).
Simple interventions that can help reduce /overcome these barriers include:
Health education on common medical and/or surgical conditions to target groups
Screening for common medical and/or surgical conditions
Providing outreach programs for target communities
Conducting relevant research activity to inform health system strengthening in Ghana
